The most common reason given for the return of the ambassadors was "for scheduled vacation" or "annual home leave." The Foreign Ministry in Beijing had no immediate comment on the reports.

Soviets: Spy committed suicide LONDON (AP) A U.S. Navy intelligence analyst who was really a longtime Soviet spy committed suicide because of "massive nervous tension" brought on by his workload, the head of the KGB was quoted today as saying. The Guardian newspaper quoted Gen. Vladimir Kryuchkov as saying Glenn Michael Souther, 32, was buried Monday in the same cemetery as Kim Philby, the British traitor who spied for Moscow.

The Soviet military newspaper Red Star published Souther's obituary on Tuesday and, in a rare admission of Soviet spying, said he was really KGB agent Mikhail Yevgenievich Orlov. "It was a tragic thing. He committed suicide," Kryuchkov was quoted as saying in an interview in Moscow on Tuesday. "He was buried yesterday (Monday). He leaves a Russian wife and daughter." The newspaper quoted Kryuchkov as saying Souther's parents and brother traveled to Moscow from the United States for the funeral.

It quoted the KGB boss as describing Souther as "a KGB major and a very honest lad. He had felt bad for some time. He was under massive nervous tension because he worked for a long time in very difficult conditions." Kryuchkov would not say how long Souther had worked for the KGB before disappearing from the United States, the Guardian said. Red Star said Souther died suddenly on June 22 but did not give a cause of death. Cylinder Package!
